About Wood Family Tree
Please sign in to see more. The history of our lineage of the Wood Family Tree be traced back to Richard Wood in 1472 from Sowerby, Yorkshire, England.
Jeremiah Wood, Richard's great, great grandson, and his family, including Jeremiah Jr,moved to Hempstead, Long Island, Nassau County, New York State in the USA sometime around 1635. It is further thought that Jeremiah Wood Jr's grandson, Samual, and his sons John and Peter settled in Westchester County, Town of Newcastle, New York State (just above the Connecticut border) around 1730. During the American Revolutionary War, Samual, John and Peter were very much involved on the British side. After the war around 1784, John went to Ontario, Canada and Samuel and Peter moved to Nova Scotia, Canada as United Empire Loyalists (UEL).
John Wood landed in Adolphustown, Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada on June 16, 1784 as part of the Major Van Alstine party. Owen Roblin Sr was also part of this settlement group. John married Owen's daughter, Rebecca. John was was granted 800 acres of land by the government for his help in settling the UEL in that District. 200 acres of the orignial land grant are still in the family and are jointly owned by Douglas Wood and his neice.
Herbert Barber Howe's book "Yorkshire to Westchester - A Chronicle of the Wood Family" traces the line from Richard through John and continues with James, John's brother who lived in the area after the war and ends about 1936.
